Birmingham Branch members attend the annual ASCE Legislative Fly-In and champion the newly-introduced Alabama Dam Safety Bill, HB 610.

"Legislation was introduced this week in Alabama, HB 610, to implement a dam safety program in the state. Alabama is the only state that currently does not regulate dams, leaving thousands of aging structures never inspected or regulated in any way. In fact, the state currently does not keep any official inventory of dams. State officials are left to only estimate that there are nearly 4,000 dams in Alabama including more than 200 that could be considered high hazard. ASCE has been working with the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) to have this measure introduced. The bill, sponsored by Representative Mary Sue McClurkin (R-Indian Springs), will likely not be acted upon during this year's legislative session, but it is expected to generate considerable discussion about the state's lack of a dam safety program."

ASCE/ASDSO Dam Safety Information Session

When: 3:30 - 5:00 pm, Wednesday April 16, 2014

Where: Renaissance Hotel. Montgomery, Alabama (Alabama Ballroom)

Alabama is the only state in the U.S. without a state dam safety program. Hundreds of aging and uninspected dams with no emergency response plan unnecessarily place the citizens, infrastructure and environment of Alabama at risk from the catastrophic effects of a dam failure. To address this public safety need, Alabama State Representative Mary Sue McClurkin has introduced House Bill 610 (HB610) to establish a dam safety program in the state. The members of ASCE, ASDSO, and other public safety stakeholders interested in dam safety can become advocates for the passage of HB610 and for promoting awareness of dam safety in Alabama. Come to an informational session sponsored by ASCE Government Relations and ASDSO to discuss dam safety issues and learn how to become an advocate. There is no cost for Registration.

Become part of the ASCE Key Contact Program

Are you interested in influencing the policy process? Helping ASCE to make its mark on legislation considered and passed in Congress and state legislatures?

ASCE Key Contacts do just that by developing relationships with elected officials. By meeting and making contacts with their elected officials in several ways, you can achieve true conversations about issues important to the profession with your elected officials and/or staff, and become a trusted advisor when bills are drafted or considered.

ASCE provides online resources for keeping up with national and state legislation, tips for contacting and interacting with elected officials, and opportunities for visiting Washington and Montgomery to discuss civil engineering issues. See ASCE's Key Contact pages (http://www.asce.org/keycontacts/) for more information and ways that you can get involved.

Help Needed for Birmingham's Infrastructure Report Card!
2013 Report Card logo

Do you want the opportunity to further develop your relationship with current clients and create relationships with potential clients? Would you like to help the general public better understand what civil engineers do and what infrastructure is?   Are you interested in making a long term impact on the economic vitality of our community?

The Birmingham Branch is launching an initiative to create a Report Card for Birmingham's infrastructure and we need you!   It is as simple as documenting the condition of Birmingham's infrastructure within your particular area of expertise through discussions with local governing authorities. ASCE's Report Card for America's Infrastructure has created a discussion at the national level bringing attention to the consequences of deteriorating infrastructure helping people to understand both what infrastructure is and what we do as civil engineers.

Now is the time to bring that same attention to the Birmingham area. Help shape the future of our region by giving a few hours of your time to document what you already know is needed.   Work will begin now and it is anticipated the draft report will be completed by the end of summer. The final report should be ready for the public by the fall.

If you are willing to give a small amount of your time please contact Shelia Montgomery Mills at shelia@ccsllc.biz

YMG seeks Interested UA and Auburn Grads

The Birmingham Branch Younger Members Group is looking for interested UA and Auburn grads to act as Practitioner Advisors to help us recruit graduating engineers into the YMG. Practitioner Advisors will act as liaisons between the YMG and their alma mater's Student Branch, making and maintaining contact with the Student Branch leadership and Faculty Advisors and helping to organize twice-yearly on-campus social and recruitment activities.

The Younger Members Group can be a valuable resource for young engineers transitioning from school to the professional workplace, especially those moving to a new city, by giving assistance on networking, professional and personal development, and social and volunteer opportunities.

If interested, please contact the YMG leadership at ymg.asce.bham@gmail.com.(ymg.asce.bham@gmail.com)
