Great outreach event or other activity? Let the whole Region know!

If you’re a local ASCE leader and your Section, Branch, Younger Member Group, or Student Chapter has staged any special events, engaged in outreach from grade-school kids to lawmakers, done charity work, fund raising or anything of the sort, let ASCEnews Weekly know and we may include it in next month’s Region report. You may already have written about it and posted pictures in your newsletter, website, or social media. Share the details and any photos at asce.org/localnews. Got questions? Purdue emeritus professor, a World War II veteran, awarded French Legion of Honor

Milton E. Harr, Ph.D., M.ASCE, NAE, emeritus professor of civil engineering at Purdue University, has received France’s highest accolade, the Legion of Honor, for helping to liberate France during World War II, notably taking part in the D-Day landing on Normandy. A ceremony honoring Harr and four other American World War II veterans was held aboard a French Navy vessel at the Port of Miami, Florida in late February.

“I feel very honored,” the 89-year-old Harr told the Daily Mail newspaper. “[D-Day] was a day much like this morning. It was overcast, there was a little drizzle and the big guns were out and behind me firing on the beach. When I got to the beach, I had never seen such wreckage in my life. It was a bloody affair but it was really necessary.” Read more about Harr’s personal and professional achievements in ASCE News.
