REGION 3 NEWS Workshop helps members advance Raising the Bar for engineering licensure Members from Region 3 recently joined colleagues from Regions 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7 to learn techniques to help them more effectively communicate at the state level the need for future civil engineers to hold a master’s degree or equivalent as a prerequisite to licensure. The Raise the Bar Advocates and Champions Training Workshop in Memphis, TN, provided guidance on communicating the Raise the Bar message and on how state government relations efforts can advance the adoption of Raise the Bar and other licensure issues. REGION 3 NEWS Region 3 members elect new director and governor George A. Ghareeb, P.E., M.ASCE, of Peoria, IL, was elected Region 3 Director-Elect in ASCE’s recent officers election. Find out about Gareeb’s background and vision for Region 3. Carl C. Sutter, P.E., C.C.S., M.ASCE, of Neenah, WI, was elected Region 3 Governor-Elect. Sutter shared his background and vision for governor.  ASCE’s 2016 president-elect elect is Norma Jean Mattei, Ph.D., P.E., F.SEI, M.COPRI, M.ASCE, of New Orleans, LA. Read her biographical outline and vision statement. The newly elected officers will be inducted at the ASCE Annual Business Meeting in October, during the ASCE Convention in New York City.

REGION 3 NEWS Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin universities compete at ASCE’s Concrete Canoe finals Photo: ASCE Michigan Technological University, the Southern Illinois University Carbondale, the University of Evansville, the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the University of Wisconsin – Platteville were among the 22 university teams from across the country and Canada to compete for the “America’s Cup of Civil Engineering,” ASCE’s 28th annual National Concrete Canoe Competition, held at Clemson University in South Carolina. Throughout the year, 215 teams of civil engineering students spent thousands of hours researching, designing and constructing their unique concrete canoes aimed at creating the winning combination of creativity, knowledge and teamwork to come out on top at spring regionals, securing them the opportunity to compete at the national competition.  Wisconsin – Madison placed seventh, Michigan Technological University came in 11th, Wisconsin – Platteville placed 13th, Evansville finished 16th, and SIU Carbondale came in 20th. This year’s first place overall was won by the University of Florida.   Complete results, photos, video>>
