LEHIGH VALLEY SECTION Section president wins teaching award Courtesy Lehigh University Lehigh Valley Section President Muhannad T. Suleiman, Ph.D., A.M.ASCE, an associate professor of geotechnical engineering at Lehigh University, recently received the Shamsher Prakash Annual Prize for Excellence in Teaching of Geotechnical Engineering. He has authored more than 65 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, with his research focused on ground improvement, thermal-active geotechnical systems, and soil-structure interaction. REGION 2 NEWS ASCE welcoming applications for Student Transition Activity 'STAY' Grants Is your ASCE Section or Branch making plans to reach out to undergraduates this year? Need money to make this year’s events more engaging and relevant? ASCE is launching a pilot test of a new Student Transition Activity Grant program for local ASCE groups in Regions 1, 2, and 3. STAY Grants will be awarded to support Society outreach to students that demonstrates the value of ASCE both during their undergraduate years and beyond. Up to 30 grants of $500 to $1,500 will be awarded to ASCE groups with plans to show students that staying with ASCE will boost their transition into the profession and take their career further. Results of the pilot in Regions 1, 2, and 3 will help determine whether to take the program nationwide. For STAY Grant guidelines, email Leslie Payne, ASCE director of student and younger member programs, at lpayne@asce.org. Applications are due Sept. 21.

DELAWARE SECTION Structural engineering VP elected Fellow Alan G. Steinle, P.E., F.ASCE, vice president of structural engineering at VanDemark and Lynch Inc., a regional civil, survey, and structural engineering firm in Wilmington, DE, has been elevated to Fellow status by the ASCE Board of Direction. PHILADELPHIA SECTION YOUNGER MEMBER FORUM Philadelphia’s YMF named by ASCE as nation’s best among large groups The Philadelphia Younger Member Forum recently was awarded the 2015 National Younger Member Group Award for Large Groups within ASCE. The group will be honored at the ASCE 2015 Convention, Oct. 10-14, in New York City. Keep up with the Philadelphia YMF on Facebook.
