FLORIDA SECTION Sawyer, former ASCE president, dies The Society’s 1991 President, James E. “Tom” Sawyer, P.E., Pres.91.ASCE, an influential bridge designer and infrastructure builder with works from Florida to Hong Kong, has died at 84. Sawyer joined ASCE in 1956, and was active for years with the Florida Section. He served as ASCE’s president in 1991. Read more about his life. |

UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA STUDENT CHAPTER Georgia student video celebrates civil engineering University of Georgia student Peter Akinosho is so excited about his potential career in civil engineering, he just has to tell you about it. Akinosho produced a video as part of his entry to ASCE’s recent Dream Big contest. It celebrates the profession – both inspiring new engineers to get excited about the field and reminding older engineers what attracted them to their careers in the first place. FLORIDA SECTION Miami-based wastewater project director elected Fellow Efrain Armijos, P.E., F.ASCE, who has more than 35 years of experience in the planning and design of water and wastewater systems and other applications of civil engineering, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction. Armijos is a senior associate with Hazen and Sawyer, a water and wastewater engineering consulting firm, based in Miami. Read more about what made him worthy of Fellow status. |
