Student Chapter in Shanghai named ASCE’s best in Region 10, welcomes winner of Dream Big contest

The Tongji University ASCE Student Chapter in Shanghai, China, has been awarded the 2016 ASCE Distinguished Chapter Award for Region 10 by the ASCE Committee on Student Members. Nathan Shellhamer, S.M.ASCE, the president of the Purdue University Student Chapter, recently delivered the award plaque during his visit to Shanghai as part of the Dream Big contest. Engineer escapes war-torn Europe in 1940s; builds groundbreaking career

Heinz G. Stefan, Dr.Ing., Dist.M.ASCE, was one of nine elected to ASCE’s highest honor –Distinguished Membership – in 2016. Stefan, a longtime University of Minnesota professor, is a world leader in water resources and environmental engineering.

His research helped launch the field of ecohydraulics. His expertise in the design of cooling water intake and discharge facilities led to advisory roles for the electric power industry domestically, as well as in India, China, and Brazil. Read more about his remarkable life and career.

Pakistan native elected Distinguished Member


M. Hanif Chaudhry, Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE, Dist.M.ASCE, was one of nine recently elected to ASCE’s highest honor – Distinguished Membership. Chaudhry grew up in Pakistan, studied in Vancouver, and today at the University of South Carolina is associate dean of the College of Engineering and Computing. His computational models of hydraulic transients are applied by engineers around the world, and he serves as a consultant to projects on six continents. Read more about his career.
