| REGION 8 NEWS Las Vegas engineer wins ASCE election for 2017 President-elect The 2016 election for ASCE officers closed June 1, and the results are in. Kristina Swallow, a program manager for the city of Las Vegas, is ASCE’s 2017 President-Elect. She will be inducted at the Annual Business Meeting, Sept. 30, at the ASCE 2016 Convention in Portland, OR. Elsewhere in Region 8, Brent M. Borchers and Lawrence M. Magura were voted in as Region Governors-Elect. |
| REGION 8 NEWS Brigham Young plays host to 2016 Steel Bridge finals  Photo courtesy Bart Quimby Members of the Oregon State University steel bridge team enjoy their time at Nationals. College teams from around the world put their bridge-building expertise to the test in the 25th National Student Steel Bridge Competition, May 27-28, at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. Montreal university École de technologie supérieure took first place in the competition, narrowly edging out Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and the University of Florida. Region 8 schools included the University of Alaska Fairbanks (fifth place), Utah State University (25th place), the University of Utah (28th place), host BYU (29th place), and Oregon State University. | OREGON SECTION Portland reservoir earns Envision Gold Tualatin Valley Water District’s Ridgewood View Park Reservoir and Pump Station in Portland recently received the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure’s Envision rating system’s Gold Award. The Ridgewood View Park project is the first joint water storage reservoir and park facility to receive an Envision award. Learn more about the project. |
| OREGON SECTION Longtime Oregon State volunteer honored with surprise party Ken Archibald was driving a Dodge Dart when he started as a practitioner adviser for the Oregon State University ASCE Student Chapter. That’s how long it’s been. Over the four decades he has helped and influenced countless Oregon State student engineers, taking the time to form personal relationships even while working full-time for the Oregon Department of Transportation.
