AEI Student Design Competition leads to prestigious award for Nebraska engineering students

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Charles W. Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction recently won the 2016 National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying Engineering Award for Connecting Professional Practice and Education.

The department’s submittal was the result of a new two-semester capstone class using the ASCE Architectural Engineering Institute Student Design Competition.

The project united electrical, structural, and mechanical engineering students on a team with faculty members and more than 50 licensed professional engineers and architects to design a proposed 17-story mixed-use highrise building.

The award jury praised the project for “its strong interaction with professional engineers as well as the complexity and multidisciplinary aspects of the project.”

Younger Members grow at ASCE leadership symposium

ASCE’s next generation of leaders gathered in early August for the Younger Member Leadership Symposium in the Washington, DC, area. Chris Podany of Omaha, NE, was among the group.

The weekend sessions included presentations from engineering professionals, ASCE staff and talented Younger Members. Topics ranged from social media and personal branding to presentation skills to leading through emotional intelligence.

The group visited the U.S. Capitol, learning about building’s architecture and structural features as well as the many renovations it has endured through the years. The trip also featured tours of two green infrastructure sites in D.C. – protected bike lanes on Pennsylvania Avenue and the Fort Reno Green Roof Reservoir, both of which inspired discussion on the possibilities of sustainable design.

Read more about the site tours, check out Kelly Doyle’s recap on the weekend from a Younger Member’s perspective, and find a Younger Member organization near you.
