| REGION 5 NEWS New 2017 officers tabbed in ASCE election The 2016 election for ASCE officers closed June 1, and the results are in. Kristina Swallow, a program manager for the city of Las Vegas, is ASCE’s 2017 President-Elect. She will be inducted at the Annual Business Meeting, Sept. 30, at the ASCE 2016 Convention in Portland, OR. In Region 5, Jeffrey J. Earhart and Katherine McLeod Gurd were selected as Region Governors-Elect. |
| REGION 5 NEWS Returning champs Florida finish third in 2016 Steel Bridge finals  Photo courtesy ASCE Foundation Members of the Kennesaw State University steel bridge team enjoy their time at Nationals. College teams from around the world put their bridge-building expertise to the test in the 25th National Student Steel Bridge Competition, May 27-28, at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. Montreal university École de technologie supérieure took first place in the competition, narrowly edging out Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and the University of Florida. GEORGIA SECTION Atlanta park earns prestigious award Atlanta’s Historic Fourth Ward Park project recently received the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure’s Envision rating system’s Gold Award. Historic Fourth Ward Park is one of the first components in the BeltLine Project, which provides a network of public parks, multi-use trails, and transit along a historic 22-mile railroad corridor circling downtown Atlanta. | ALABAMA SECTION Future of licensure in good hands with ASCE member leadership Daniel Turner, emeritus professor at the University of Alabama, has dedicated his life to civil engineering. And just as his teaching career would seem to be slowing down, he’s set to take over as president of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.
