LOUISIANA SECTION ASCE members step up to rebuild after flood ASCE members continue to step up when their communities are down. Last month’s record-breaking floods in Baton Rouge, LA, inspired one member’s hands-on rescue efforts, and members of the Baton Rouge Branch have organized recovery events and volunteered their expertise. The Branch has set up a YouCaring account to raise money for the rebuild efforts. Those interested in donating can do so here. |

GEORGIA SECTION Civil engineering entrepreneur honored as example to women Marsha D. Anderson Bomar, M.ASCE, is a recipient of ASCE’s 2016 William H. Wisely American Civil Engineer Award, which recognizes individuals or groups of individuals who are members of ASCE and who have made continuing efforts to promote appreciation for the history, tradition, developments, and technical and professional activities of the Society. Bomar was honored for her outstanding example to women as a leader in the civil management firm, established in 1990, which she sold to Stantec Consulting Services Inc., Duluth, GA, in 2010. LOUISIANA SECTION Former Region 5 Governor and Louisiana Section President DesOrmeaux dies Eugene Raymond “Ray” DesOrmeaux, P.E., F.ASCE, former Region 5 Governor and devoted Lafayette, LA, civil engineer, died recently, one day shy of his 77th birthday. A native of New Orleans, DesOrmeaux saw his life’s work as service to his home state of Louisiana, particularly the people of Lafayette. The ASCE Life Member served terms as president, secretary, and treasurer of the Louisiana Section, and was a Region 5 Governor representing the state. Read more about his extraordinary life. . |
FLORIDA SECTION Hanson COO earns Fellow status John Coombe, P.E., S.E., F.ASCE, an executive vice-president and chief operating officer at Hanson Professional Services Inc., has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction. Coombe works in the company’s Sarasota, FL, regional office and leads Hanson’s efforts to expand its operations in the state. He joined Hanson in 1978 as a design engineer at the Springfield, IL, headquarters. He has administered and managed Hanson’s transportation planning, design and construction projects, and overall company operations. After becoming a partner in the firm in 1987, he soon became a vice-president. He was named chief operating officer in 1998 and oversees the company’s administrative operations. GEORGIA SECTION Georgia Tech professor achieves Fellow status John C. Crittenden, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, director of the Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems and a professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
