SEPTEMBER ASCE BOARD OF DIRECTION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

Historically Diverse Board Meets at Convention, Approves Region Realignment 

F. Jay Burress, P.E., M. ASCE, your Region 7 Director is a member of the Kansas City Section.  Jay  represented you at the Sept. 27-28 Board meeting in Portland, OR, held in conjunction with the ASCE 2016 Convention. ASCE’s incoming officers participated in the Board meeting as observers and were formally installed Sept. 30 at the annual business meeting. With the new officers, the Board membership now includes six women, making it the most diverse Board in Society history.
 
This was Jay’s last Board meeting as your Region director. Please welcome Marsia A. Geldert-Murphey, P.E., M.ASCE, to that role and wish Jay the best.

Highlights of the Board meeting included:

• Receiving recommendations from the special Raise the Bar Review Task Committee (see story in ASCE News).

• Approving recommendations from the Task Committee on Geographic Boundaries, including the reassignment of Mexico from Region 10 to Region 6, the reassignment of Canada from Region 10 to regions 1, 3, or 8, depending on the provinces’  locations, and reassignment of Puerto Rico from Region 1 to Region 5. In addition, the Board authorized a Constitutional amendment to add a third Technical Region Director to the Board, to be placed on the 2017 election ballot for a vote by the overall ASCE membership.

• Engaging in 2016 Convention activities, including sessions such as the Industry Leaders Forum discussion on the ASCE Grand Challenge, keynote speakers, and technical tours. Directors joined attendees to get a sneak peek at the new IMAX film, Dream Big: Engineering Our World, set for release in February. The film is being produced by MacGillivray Freeman Films in partnership with ASCE, and is presented by Bechtel. Portland proved to be a wonderful host city, particularly well-situated for some of the major civil engineering issues facing our industry, including those involving sustainability and resilience.

COLORADO SECTION
Symposium highlights infrastructure ideas in Colorado

The Colorado Section and the University of Colorado, Boulder recently hosted its first Symposium on Sustainable Infrastructure at CU-Boulder’s Wolf Law Building.

The symposium included speakers from industry, government, and academia on various topics of resiliency, climate change, economics, the case for sustainable infrastructure, and sector-specific presentations on water/wastewater, energy, buildings, and transportation.

The symposium’s success resulted in establishing a number of student scholarships for Envision’s sustainable infrastructure rating system certification and other support for sustainability advocacy in the state. Plans are already in the works for a second symposium in 2017.

ST. LOUIS SECTION
Missouri engineer and educator earns Fellow honors 

Andrew Curtis (Curt) Elmore, Ph.D., P.E. F.EWRI, F.ASCE, who has spent the last 30 years in the water resources and environmental engineering field, has been elevated to the status of Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.

Elmore began as a consulting engineering specializing in remedial design at large, formerly-used defense Superfund sites, and then became an educator and researcher at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, MO.
