PUERTO RICO SECTION San Juan hosts SEI leadership conference Structural Engineering Institute chapter leaders held their annual SEI Local Leaders Conference in San Juan. Representatives of more than 30 SEI professional and graduate student chapters learned about new initiatives and best practices and were trained on post-disaster safety evaluations of buildings and infrastructure. |
REGION 1 NEWS Region 1 projects are changing the ‘Game’  Photo courtesy ASCE The BEAST at Rutgers University is one of the new ASCE Game Changers. ASCE recently designated 15 projects as Game Changers, adding to the 41 projects and 24 trends announced in 2015 at the outset of the Game Changers project. Five of those new Game Changers are in Region 1: ASCE Game Changers represent the top trends and innovative projects shaping the future of water, energy, freight, and transportation infrastructure. Selected projects and trends spotlight groundbreaking technology and creative thinking to solve problems facing the nation’s infrastructure. Game Changers span the 16 categories of infrastructure graded in ASCE’s Report Card for America’s Infrastructure. Learn more about how each Game Changer is shaping the future of infrastructure. METROPOLITAN SECTION Guest lecturer dispenses geotechnical insights The Metropolitan Section gained insights into geotechnical engineering failures with a guest lecture by Robert Gilbert, Ph.D., of the University of Texas at Austin. Case studies explored slope stability and an offshore oil extraction tower. Gilbert stressed consideration of “interim” construction conditions in the design process. |
