Best Practice of the Month: Host A Student Officer's Caucus
The October Best Practice of the Month highlights the importance of engaging Section and Branch officers with Student Chapter officers at a hosted caucus meeting.
Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section/ASCE has been sponsoring a Student Officers' Caucus with nine universities for more than 20 years. This Best Practice is a tested example used annually to invite and engage Student Chapter members to attend Section and Branch events and better understand local resources that are available to them for their programs. Some key highlights of this program include:
• Engaging a Section/Branch champion to contact each student chapter advisor to discuss, schedule, and organize an event during the first semester of school. • Preparing a caucus agenda that may include an icebreaker, networking session, presentations, and a calendar of upcoming key events. • Preparing a program handout that contains accurate contact information. •
Sharing pertinent information at the caucus in a concise manner engaging the audience. • Soliciting sponsors to cover some of the event costs.
Using this best practice, your Section or Branch can become more effective engaging students to attend Section and/or Branch events and to encourage future participation as a member of ASCE.

Resume Writing Tips from ASCE's Career Connections
What do employers look for in a resume? Are you about to begin a job search and updating your resume? Be sure to visit ASCE’s Career Connections and check out the open positions. A winning resume will be a tremendous asset as you begin applying. Here are a few tips to building a resume that will make you stand out from the others and land an interview:
• Make your resume easy for the reader to find the names of companies, titles held, and dates employed. • You cannot expect the employer to do ANY work; it all has to be accessible and right there. On average, the employer will only spend 15-20 seconds reviewing the document. •
Provide the factual information that showcases your skills and provide your results. • Emphasize how your experience will benefit the company. Understand the employer’s perspective: How can you make their life better? How can you make the company more profitable? That is what your resume should emphasize. Get more tips on resume writing.
Add ASCE professional certification to your credentials
Academies of ASCE offer post-licensure credentials to civil engineers to help distinguish themselves in the fields of water resources, geotechnical, coastal, ocean, port, and navigation engineering. Certification recognizes the attainment of advanced knowledge and skills in a specialty area of civil engineering. ASCE created professional post-licensure certification in the various specialties within civil engineering. Specialty certification complements ASCE's goals of developing leadership, advancing technology, advocating lifelong learning, and promoting the profession. For more information, visit www.asce.org/certification.
Academy Exams via Skype
Engineering Certification, Inc. (CEC), the certification arm of ASCE, has started conducting examinations remotely using Skype videoconferencing. The Academy of Geo-Professionals (AGP) is the first Academy to experiment with videoconferencing for its exams. The main idea behind conducting an exam remotely is that it saves both time and money, for the applicant and the Academy. By not having to pay for travel expenses and not having to take time away from work and family, the videoconferencing option is a win-win situation. The Academy of Coastal, Ocean, Port and Navigation Engineers (ACOPNE) and the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE) will be looking into conducting future exams remotely as well.
exam consists of the applicant preparing a presentation on a project that they’ve worked on and answering questions about it from a panel of experts. The panel is made up of three Diplomates from the Academy. Exams are generally about an hour in length, but vary from applicant to applicant. The onus is on the applicant to convince the panel that they’ve achieved knowledge at the expert level in the Academy’s Body of Knowledge (BoK).
In order to be eligible for certification, applicants must possess an engineering license (PE), a Master’s degree (or equivalent) and at least 10 years of progressive work experience. To apply, please visit the certification website.
Issues & Advocacy
SPAG Deadline Approaching
Friday, Nov. 1 deadline to submit SPAG (State Public Affairs Grants) is approaching. The goal of SPAG is to enhance the image of civil engineers as leaders and experts on America's vital infrastructure systems and to encourage advocacy on ASCE priority issues that are important to civil engineers. By applying for a SPAG grant, your Section can leverage current Section funding for a new initiative, add a new component to your existing work, or fund an innovative idea for outreach. If you have any questions about the eligibility of a program, you may contact ASCE Government Relations staff at email@example.com for guidance before submitting the proposal. Detailed information on how to apply is available at asce.org/spag.
