Best Practice of the Month: Resume Preparation Program
Best Practice of the month comes from the Buffalo Section's resume preparation program for students. Often, hiring managers at engineering firms mention that they have seen poorly written resumes or ones that were quickly developed by students before a job interview. Students can utilize the assistance of the Section’s young professionals to advise them on tips to properly prepare more effective and professional resumes. The Buffalo Section documented this effective collaborative effort between the younger members and the student chapter of the University of Buffalo in the Section and Branches Best Practices Guide. This practice represents one example of the value offered by our ASCE Sections to graduating students.
The board of the ASCE Foundation approved grants of $1,000 for each Section celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2012, 2013, or 2014. This was kicked-off with the Georgia Section in 2012, and followed by the 2013 celebrations of Los Angeles, Oregon, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Texas.
Texas Section generously included the ASCE Foundation in its Centennial Celebration which took place on September 13th in Dallas, Texas. The celebration at Dallas' Old Red Courthouse included a special event for Texas Foundation donors before the real party began with barbeque and line dancing!
If your Section is celebrating in 2014, and has not yet requested your $1,000 grant, please contact Caitlin Toynbee at 703-295-6445. You can also contact Caitlin if you have received your grant and are interested in giving attribution to the Foundation or having a representative attend your signature centennial event. Our mascot, Phil the hedgehog, loves to travel!

Share Your Wisdom! Become a Mentor!
ASCE's eCareerMentor is an online tool that allows ASCE members to connect with other members who share common interests or specific expertise. As
a Section/Branch Leader, you are a perfect candidate for the role of
mentor. Following are a few of the many benefits of becoming a mentor:
Your relationship with your protégée will help you develop your
communication and people skills, and enhance your own civil engineering
professional skills and personal life •
Becoming a mentor is an
opportunity for you to “give back.” Someone may have helped you when you
were early in your career; now is your chance to pay it forward • Becoming a mentor is an honor as you help someone else achieve their goals • Reviewing your own professional journey with someone helps you revisit all you have accomplished • You will be proud as you discover mentoring is a powerful way to make a difference in another’s career path
It’s that time of year again! Mark your calendars for March 18-20, ASCE’s 2014 Legislative Fly-In in Washington, DC. Details, including schedule and application information, are now available on ASCE’s website. The application deadline is December 2nd.
Legislative Fly-In provides ASCE members with the opportunity to learn about public policy issues affecting the civil engineering profession, and to communicate the civil engineer’s perspective on those issues with elected officials on Capitol Hill. Help us reach our 2013 goal of having all 50 states represented!
How Has Your Group Promoted Infrastructure This Year?
year, ASCE Sections and Branches across the country have been working to raise awareness of our country’s infrastructure challenges using the 2013 Report Card for America's Infrastructure, state and local level Report Cards, writing letters, and meeting with their elected officials. Whether you’ve been leading an effort or joining in on activities when you have time, let us know what your group has been up to by answering a quick 3-question survey. Thank you for all you are doing! If ASCE staff can be of assistance in your infrastructure outreach efforts, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org!

The ASCE Foundation Encourages You to Celebrate Giving Tuesday
December 3 is the second annual National Giving Tuesday, a call to action to encourage increased, targeted, and more informed giving during the holiday season. Giving Tuesday celebrates paying it forward, proving we can do more with our wallets than just shop.
The ASCE Foundation
joined in last year’s inaugural Giving Tuesday one of more than 2,500 charities, foundations, and organizations from all 50 states which came together to encourage the public to pay it forward and help others. This national day of giving follows Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday each year. The inaugural Giving Tuesday helped ensure that philanthropy stays a part of the holiday season. Our supporters responded with generous online donations to the ASCE Foundation.
This year we are continuing the conversation, and need your help to exceed last year’s level of support. On December 3rd make an online gift to the ASCE Foundation
that will pay it forward to the next generation of civil engineers. And as Giving Tuesday approaches, we want to know your reason for giving back. Do you give to inspire? To serve? To connect? Follow the Foundation on Facebook and share your reasons to give.
