TEXAS SECTION Texas Tech professor honored with ASCE’s Cermak Award for wind engineering Kishor C. Mehta, Ph.D., P.E., Dist.M.ASCE, NAE, has won the 2014 Jack E. Cermak Medal for outstanding contributions to wind engineering, particularly for systematic studies of structural damage caused by windstorms and leadership in the development of structural design standards for wind loads. The P.W. Horn professor of civil engineering at Texas Tech University is a highly regarded authority on wind engineering. He was the first person from Texas Tech selected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Learn more about what made Mehta worthy of the Cermak Medal in ASCE News.

NEW MEXICO SECTION, TEXAS SECTION New Mexico State University, Texas A&M University compete in Concrete Canoe finals Ed Rieker/AP Images for ASCE Two universities within Region 6 and their civil engineering student teams competed at ASCE’s 27th annual National Concrete Canoe Competition last weekend , held at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in Pennsylvania. Up against 22 other teams with its canoe Protogenoi, New Mexico State University placed a solid 13th overall, including ninth for its Final Product and also ninth overall in points standings in the canoe races. Ed Rieker/AP Images for ASCE Texas A&M’s canoe, Horton, was perhaps the most whimsical of all canoes competing; it was based on the classic Dr. Seuss tale, “Horton Hears a Who.” This year was the first since 2006 that A&M made it to the national competition. IN ASCE’s CIVIL ENGINEERING ONLINE MAGAZINE Construction disputes take less time, more money, new report finds The global average construction dispute rose by $400,000—to $32.1 million—between 2012 and 2013, but the time it took to settle the average dispute dropped from 12.8 months to slightly less than one year, according to a new report released by ARCADIS, the multidiscipline consulting firm based in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
