Verrazano-Narrows Bridge celebrates 50th anniversary

Courtesy USPS

November 21 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. With a main span of 4,260 feet across the Narrows, the double-decked bridge carries 12 lanes of Interstate 278 to connect the New York City boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn. It was the last major public works project of Robert Moses, and the last project designed by O.A. Ammann. As part of the anniversary, the Postal Service has issued an express mail stamp featuring the bridge, which has been shown on U.S. mail stamps since its opening in 1964.

The Staten Island Historical Society is holding an exhibit, Spanning the Narrows for Five Decades,  through the end of the year featuring photos and artifacts from the MTA archives. Another exhibit at the New York Transit Museum in downtown Brooklyn will run through March 23, 2015.  Section website>>
