SACRAMENTO SECTION Army Corps regional commander headlines Construction Institute chapter’s Student Days Courtesy Construction Institute Sacramento Chapter About 60 civil engineering students from four Northern California universities enjoyed an engaging Student Days event staged by the Construction Institute’s Sacramento Chapter. Aimed at helping students prepare for life after school, the two-day program featured a keynote address by Army Corps of Engineers Brig. Gen. Mark Toy, commander of the South Pacific District, at center of the above photo with chapter Student Days organizers. For the students from Chico State University, Sacramento State University, University of California-Davis, and University of the Pacific, Saturday’s program included an open panel discussion led by local professionals in the fields of geotechnical engineering, structural engineering and water resources. The day concluded with a full tour of ongoing construction of the USACE Fulsom Dam Auxiliary Spillway Project led by Granite Construction site staff. |
SAN FRANCISCO Member of the Society’s forensic engineering council elected an ASCE Fellow Joshua B. Kardon, Ph.D., S.E., F.ASCE, owner and principal engineer of Berkeley, CA–based Joshua B. Kardon + Company Structural Engineers, which he founded in 1978, has been elevated to ASCE Fellow status by the Society’s Board of Direction. A member of ASCE’s Technical Council on Forensic Engineering and a plenary speaker at ASCE’s Fifth Congress on Forensic Engineering in November 2009, Kardon’s writings on the “Standard of Care,” the concept of care in engineering and engineering ethics, have been published in books and peer-reviewed journals, and he has spoken on those topics as an invited and peer-reviewed presenter both nationally and internationally. Through his commitment to engineering practice for more than 35 years, lifelong learning and mentoring, and professional service to ASCE and other organizations, Kardon sets a commendable example for his colleagues and aspiring engineers.
