February 2015

Great outreach event or other activity? Let the whole Region know!

If you’re a local ASCE leader and your Section, Branch, Younger Member Group, or Student Chapter has staged any special events, engaged in outreach from grade-school kids to lawmakers, done charity work, fund raising or anything of the sort, let ASCEnews Weekly know and we may include it in next month’s Region report. You may already have written about it and posted pictures in your newsletter, website, or social media. Share the details and any photos at asce.org/localnews. Got questions? Write to submissions@asce.org.

NORTH CAROLINA SECTION
Environmental engineering professor at Duke elected to membership in NAE

Mark R. Wiesner, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE, James L. Meriam Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and director at the Center for the Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology at Duke University, was elected to membership in the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for his contributions to membrane technologies for water treatment and to the understanding of environmental behavior and risk of nanomaterials. He initiated research on the factors controlling membrane performance, and proposed using coagulants as a pretreatment, a practice that has become a widely accepted standard for water and wastewater treatment with membranes. Later, he and his students developed cost models that predicted what would make membrane filtration cost-competitive with conventional technologies – an achievement that was honored with ASCE’s Rudolph Hering Award in 1995. Discover more about what made Wiesner worthy of this honor in ASCE News.
