University of Florida professor wins ASCE’s Computing in Civil Engineering Award


Ian Flood, Ph.D., A.M.ASCE, is the recipient of the Computing in Civil Engineering Award for extraordinary leadership in the advancement of computing in civil engineering through academic research, project application, and Society service. Holland professor and coordinator of the Ph.D. Program at the Rinker School of Building Construction in the College of Design, Construction and Planning at the University of Florida, Flood has made an extraordinary contribution to the advancement of computing in civil engineering through his research, service to publications, and leadership within ASCE’s Technical Council on Computing and Information Technology (TCCIT). LOUISIANA SECTION
Bonnet Carré Spillway joins ASCE’s historic civil engineering landmarks

In service for 84 years, the Bonnet Carré Spillway just west of New Orleans has been named by ASCE to its roster of National Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks. Built in the aftermath of the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927,  the spillway represented a new U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approach to flood control. Explore the new landmark in ASCE News.

GEORGIA SECTION
Distinguished Member, first practicing highway engineer to serve on NTSB dies


George W. Black, Jr., P.E., Dist.M.ASCE, whose expertise and leadership in the area of transportation engineering and highway safety led to his service as the first practicing highway engineer to be appointed and confirmed as a member of the National Transportation and Safety Board, died January 18 at the age of 69. Twice appointed by President Bill Clinton as a member of the NTSB, he was assigned to many of the accidents during his tenure in all modes of transportation. In 1999, his work on the USAir Flight 427 and United Airlines Flight 585 accident investigations earned him a Laurels Award from Aviation Week and Space Technology Magazine.
