BOSTON SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS SECTION Autio honored for environmental engineering work Anni H. Autio, P.E., M.ASCE, an active member of the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section, is a recipient of ASCE’s 2016 William H. Wisely American Civil Engineer Award, which recognizes individuals or groups of individuals who are members of ASCE and who have made continuing efforts to promote appreciation for the history, tradition, developments, and technical and professional activities of the Society. Autio was honored for her guidance and leadership as a civil engineer in all phases of environmental projects, her dedication to preserve the history and heritage of ASCE and the profession, and her unselfish service to ASCE. METROPOLITAN SECTION Purple Panthers talk shop Photo courtesy ASCE NYU Tandon A group of students from New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering Student Chapter had a booth at the school’s Club Fest to promote their activities and talk with other students. Learn more about the Purple Panthers on their Facebook page. RHODE ISLAND SECTION Runway extension in Providence honored for sustainability The Providence’s Runway 5 Extension at T.F. Green Airport received the Envision rating system’s Gold award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. The project is the 16th overall Envision-rated project and first project rated in Rhode Island. The project involved lengthening T.F. Green’s main runway to 8,700 feet as part of a multi-year Airport Improvement Program to accommodate aviation activity demand and enhance the safety areas. The extension is also designed to improve flight efficiency through increased payloads and reduced weight penalties and to accommodate long-haul service to the West Coast.
