REGION DIRECTOR'S REPORT Highlights of July’s ASCE Board of Direction Meeting John A. Frauenhoffer, P.E., S.E., M.ASCE, your Region 3 Director, is a member of the Central Illinois Section and is the Senior Structural Engineer of Engineering Resource Associates, Inc., a full service civil engineering firm located in Warrenville, Chicago, Geneva, and Champaign, Illinois. John represented you at the July 11-13 Board meeting in Stowe, Vermont. The ASCE Board gathered for its ongoing process of setting strategic direction for the Society and addressing the specific issues and programs that require board input and approval. ILLINOIS SECTION Co-founder of Illinois engineering firm elected ASCE Fellow Robert B. Hamilton, P.E., PTOE, EXW, F.ASCE, co-founder in 1981 of Vernon Hills, Illinois-based of Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc., has been elevated to ASCE Fellow status by the Society’s Board of Direction. Recently retired as chairman/CEO, under Hamilton’s leadership, the firm steadily grew to a staff of 80 from its launch with just himself and co-founder Dave Gewalt. With more than 34 years of experience as a civil and traffic engineer, Hamilton’s specialties include storm water, water supply, municipal engineering, traffic engineering, and expert witness testimony. CINCINNATI SECTION University of Cincinnati structural engineering prof elected ASCE Fellow Bahram M. Shahrooz, Ph.D., P.E., F.SEI, F.ASCE, a professor of structural engineering at the University of Cincinnati, has been elevated to ASCE Fellow status by the Society’s Board of Direction. Shahrooz has served as a consultant on several projects dealing with the use of innovative concepts for strengthening of existing bridges and storage tanks, the use of fiber-reinforced concrete for culverts, and product development for leading construction industries. He has applied his research to revise the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ LRFD Bridge Design Specifications to allow the use of high-strength reinforcing bars. ILLINOIS SECTION Modern new library in Chicago reshaped to fit unusual site Chicago’s Public Buildings Commission utilizes a common “prototype” for its library designs, tweaking as needed. But an unusual, triangular site for the city’s new Chinatown branch library gave local architects at Skidmore Owings and Merrill an opportunity to really rethink the prototype.
