REGION DIRECTOR'S REPORT Highlights of July’s ASCE Board of Direction Meeting William P. Grogan, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE, your Region 5 Director, is a member of the Mississippi Section and is the Deputy Director, Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Bill represented you at the July 11-13 Board meeting in Stowe, Vermont. The ASCE Board gathered for its ongoing process of setting strategic direction for the Society and addressing the specific issues and programs that require board input and approval. FLORIDA SECTION ASCE member appointed to state commission on hurricane losses Forrest Masters, P.E., Ph.D., M.ASCE, an associate professor at the Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering in the Engineering School for Sustainable Infrastructure at the University of Florida, has been named by Gov. Rick Scott to the Florida Commission on Hurricane Loss Projection Methodology. Masters is a leading academic researcher on wind engineering who has published more than 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings and is a reviewer for five academic journals. Recently he shared his expertise with Jim Cantore of The Weather Channel, demonstrating the university’s hurricane simulator, used to test construction materials and make homes safer. FLORIDA SECTION University of North Florida dean elected ASCE Fellow Mark A. Tumeo, Ph.D., J.D., P.E., F.ASCE, dean of the College of Computing, Engineering and Construction and a professor of civil engineering at the University of North Florida, has been elevated to ASCE Fellow status by the Society’s Board of Direction. Actively involved in ASCE, Tumeo has served as an associate editor of ASCE’s Journal of Environmental Engineering, and currently serves as corresponding editor for ASCE’s Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice. MISSISSIPPI SECTION New museum in Biloxi replaces one leveled by Hurricane Katrina The original Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum opened in 1986 in a former U.S. Coast Guard building in an area known as Point Cadet. Its mission is to preserve and interpret the maritime history and heritage of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, but it was leveled by Hurricane Katrina. Now, nearly nine years after the storm, the city is preparing to open the newly reconstructed museum, which is designed to sustain severe flooding and hurricane-force winds.
