REGION DIRECTOR'S REPORT Highlights of October’s ASCE Board of Direction Meeting F. Jay Burress, P.E., M. ASCE, your Region 7, Director, is a member of the Kansas City Section and is a senior project manager at Shafer, Kline & Warren, Inc. (SKW). Jay represented you at the October 5-6 Board meeting in Panama City, Panama, held in conjunction with ASCE’s Global Engineering Conference 2014. The conference helped commemorate the 100th anniversary of one of civil engineering’s greatest achievements—the Panama Canal. Seeing the massive effort underway to expand the canal, and collaborating on the conference with ASCE’s partner Engineers Without Borders–USA, gave additional meaning to the Board members’ role of guiding the important work of ASCE and the profession. Also participating in this meeting as observers were ASCE’s incoming officers, who were formally installed during the annual business meeting later in the week. KANSAS SECTION Geosynthetics expert at the University of Kansas elected an ASCE Fellow Jie Han, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, a professor of civil, environmental, and architectural engineering at the University of Kansas. has been elevated to ASCE Fellow status by the Society’s Board of Direction. Han’s research and practical experiences have dealt with geosynthetics, ground improvement, pile foundations, buried structures, and roadways and his design methods and research results have been widely adopted or cited in the field of geosynthetics, ground improvement, and roadway design. IN ASCE’s CIVIL ENGINEERING ONLINE MAGAZINE Dramatic national memorial honors disabled veterans The nation’s newest memorial is not only a tribute to disabled veterans but also a triumph of design and engineering teamwork. The Disabled Veterans’ Life Memorial Foundation selected a design by Washington, DC-based Michael Vergason Landscape Architects in 2003 from among 20 submissions in an invitational design competition. COLORADO SECTION Geotechnical senior VP at Shannon & Wilson elected an ASCE Fellow Gregory R. Fischer, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, senior vice president in the Denver office of Shannon & Wilson, Inc., has been elevated to ASCE Fellow status by the Society’s Board of Direction. Throughout his distinguished career, Fisher has worked on numerous award-winning projects, including the Gold Camp Tunnel Repair and Historical Preservation, in Teller County, CO, and the Grand Forks Slope Stabilization, in Grand Forks, ND. Author of more than 30 technical papers, Fischer has taught geotechnical and foundation engineering classes at several universities and lectured both in the U.S. and abroad.
