Massachusetts honors BSCES for aiding Boston Marathon bombing aftermath efforts

After the tragic bombing last year at the Boston Marathon, there was a collective desire to help.  Many asked “what can I do?”  There was immediate action to donate to the One Fund. In support of the victims of the Marathon bombings, BSCES teamed with other organizations in the engineering/construction industry to donate a total of $20,000 to the One Fund.

Over the past year, BSCES and the engineering/construction industry have been working with the Commonwealth as members of the Boston Survivor Accessibility Alliance. BSCES members have participated in a wide variety of projects ranging from plan development for a garage to structural design for new openings.   On April 7, BSCES was awarded a Citation from Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick for these efforts.  BSCES is very proud of its members and the contributions that have been made.    Section website>>               .

METROPOLITAN SECTION
Section president urges civil engineers to take lead on climate change

“ASCE's first Canon of Ethics states: ‘Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public and shall strive to comply with the principles of sustainable development in the performance of their professional duties.’ As principal authorities on the vulnerability and sustainability of infrastructure systems, we can and should lend our voice to the discussions about [climate change] that will undoubtedly impact these systems and perhaps regions of coastline, and potentially render them unusable and uninhabitable,” writes Metropolitan Section President Steve Kaufman in his latest President’s Message in the May issue of the Section’s newsletter. “Our knowledge and capabilities will be intrinsic in formulating rational, economically-sound solutions to the consequences of what may be an unprecedented alteration in climate that could continue for the unforeseeable future. This is an obligation we hold for society as well as for our children and the generations to follow.”  Read Kaufman’s message>>   Section website>>

The ASCE Rochester Section hosted a lunch/presentation and a tour of the under-construction Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority Transit Center on May 16. Speakers were Jim Durfee and Mitch McAllister of Bergmann Associates, Joe Merriam (Pike), Steve Savage (Pike), Dave Belaskas (RGRTA), and Erin McCormick (RGRTA).  The presentation included information on RGRTA’s background, a project overview, details on the design build process, architectural strategy and design, details on BIM, total robotic station and laser scanning, engineering/construction challenges and the economic and jobs impacts as a result of this project. The Transit Center is slated to open in the fall.  More photos, details>>   Section website>>

MAINE SECTION
University of Maine student chapter wins Region 1 Distinguished Chapter Award

Emily Tynes, president of ASCE’s University of Maine student chapter, filed this report for the Maine Section May 2014 Newsletter:
“The UMaine Chapter has had an incredibly exciting month. We found out that we were a finalist for the Robert Ridgway Award. There were only four finalists out of 304 chapters. We were also given the 2014 ASCE Distinguished Chapter Award for Region 1! This award is presented to the most outstanding chapter in the region based on the 2013 annual report. We are grateful for the hard work of our 2013 officers, our 2013 advisor, Will Manion, and our practitioner advisor, Lucas Stiles for helping us earn these achievements! We also held our 2014 Student Gala where the senior capstone groups presented their projects. It was a very successful event and our seniors had a great night. Another success our chapter had was the last weekend in April. We came in 5th overall at the Concrete Canoe Competition and found out we will be hosting the competition next year!”  Section newsletter>>  Student chapter website>>

Harvard engineering professor wins von Karman Medal

James R. Rice, Ph.D., F.EMI, M.ASCE,  has won ASCE’s von Karman Medal for 2014 for his fundamental contributions to mechanics and its engineering applications. The Mallinckrodt Professor of Engineering Sciences and Geophysics at Harvard University, Rice has defined many of the most exciting frontiers of solid mechanics and has made significant contributions to fields like interfacial fracture, poroelasticity, frictional stability, and crack front waves in a career spanning nearly 50 years. Rice’s work is marked by elegant mechanics, state-of-the-art computations, and penetrating interpretation of results within a broad context of laboratory and field observations.
