Students and faculty of the Civil Engineering Department at Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management and Engineering, in Mumbai, India, launched their official ASCE International Student Group in April with “Ingeniero 2014,” a two-day conference at the university that drew more than 110 participants. The event’s first day was dominated by a series of mental and physical competitions that put students’ engineering skills to the test, including an ice cream stick bridge-making contest, a rapid-fire civil engineering quiz, and an elocution contest testing presentation skills.

A formal inauguration ceremony was held on the second day featuring ASCE India Section Western Region President Arvind Shah and Treasurer-Joint Secretary Ravindra Ringshia as guests of honor. Following a lamp lighting and religious invocation, Shah and Ringshia unveiled a logo for the group, known as CESA, the Civil Engineering Student Association. Professor Manoj Anaokar explained the origins of CESA’s formation and its vision and mission. Shah discussed the role of ASCE-ISWR and its activities, plus how they fit into his more than five decades of civil engineering experience. Ringshia detailed responsibilities of an ASCE student chapter and benefits of becoming an ASCE student member. He then enlightened attendees with a lecture on recent advances in cast-in-place pipes. The event concluded with a “vote of thanks” from third-year student Priyanka Ramchandani.  See the new website for ASCE India>>

More than six months after the most powerful, deadliest typhoon to hit the Philippines in its history, the nation is still reeling. In early May, a team of seven civil engineers from ASCE’s Technical Council on Forensic Engineering, in cooperation with the Technical Council on Wind Engineering, spent a week there to conduct post-disaster assessments, documenting evidence of structural and geo-system damage to historic and residential structures and public infrastructure. Members of the team chronicled their findings in an exclusive daily report for ASCE.   Read the daily diary>>

The National University of Science and Technology’s School of Civil and Environmental Engineering in Islamabad, Pakistan, launched the formal process of establishing an ASCE International Student Group with a well-attended introductory symposium in April. ASCE’s Pakistan Section has offered its support since last December, when the university’s group approached the Section for supervision.

At the symposium, student officers were appointed and eager attendees were briefed on ASCE as a professional platform that helps civil engineers around the world develop and enhance their careers. Faculty advisor Wasim Khaliq, Ph.D., M.ASCE, explained the technical contributions ASCE makes to the profession and the benefits of forming an ASCE student group. The enthusiastic provisional group is well on its way with 120 student members.
