May 2014 AKRON-CANTON SECTION University of Akron set to host National Student Steel Bridge Competition Photo courtesy University of Akron Student Chapter A team of civil engineering students at the University of Akron, site of the 2014 National Student Steel Bridge Competition, practices building its steel bridge. The university will be hosting the 2014 National Student Steel Bridge Competition this weekend, May 23-24. Teams from 49 universities will be competing, having emerged from regional competitions in which a total of 208 teams competed from throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and China. Jointly organized by the American Institute of Steel Construction, ASCE and the University of Akron Civil Engineering Department, the NSSBC challenges student teams to design and fabricate a one-tenth scale steel bridge. Contest rules reflect structural specifications and construction regulations. Students practice structural design/analysis and project management, as well as learning fabrication techniques and gaining appreciation for the strength and constructability of steel. Even so, the best grade was a C+ for bridges and aviation each; the worst, a D– for navigable water. "The 2014 Report Card demonstrates that we can improve the current condition of Illinois infrastructure — when investments are made and projects move forward, the grades improve," the Section wrote. “While the modest progress is encouraging, there is much work left to be done. … To raise our infrastructure grades, we need to create sustainable infrastructure investment programs that plan for the future Illinois we want our children to live in, and continue the positive momentum we have seen over the past four years.” Explore the Report Card>> Section website>> MICHIGAN SECTION University of Michigan professor wins ASCE award for computing applications SangHyun Lee, Ph.D., A.M.ASCE, has won ASCE’s 2014 Daniel W. Halpin Award for Scholarship in Construction for his groundbreaking research in computer simulation and information technology, and its application to the construction industry. The John L. Tishman CM Faculty Scholar in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan has established research programs and pursued fundamental new knowledge in automatic behavior monitoring for analysis of construction fatalities and injuries. Lee’s timely efforts in monitoring and control for effective and efficient project delivery have greatly contributed to addressing how such large-scale project development can be both cost-effective and time-effective.
