August 2014

Great outreach event or other activity? Let the whole Region know!

If you’re a local ASCE leader and your Section, Branch, Younger Member Group, or Student Chapter has staged any special events, engaged in outreach from grade-school kids to lawmakers, done charity work, fund raising or anything of the sort, let ASCEnews Weekly know and we may include it in next month’s Region report. You may already have written about it and posted pictures in your newsletter, website, or social media. Share the details and any photos at asce.org/localnews. Got questions? Write to submissions@asce.org.

UC Boulder civil engineering professor and co-founder of EWB-USA wins 2015 OPAL for education

Bernard Amadei, Ph.D., Dist.M.ASCE, NAE, professor of civil engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder and founding president of Engineers Without Borders USA, is the recipient of ASCE’s 2015 Outstanding Projects and Leaders lifetime achievement award for education.

Amadei holds the Mortenson Endowed Chair in Global Engineering at UC Boulder, which focuses on “engineering from a humanist perspective” and provides students an interactive education not only in the study of engineering, but also involves “history, sociology, economics, and political theory.”  His role in EWB-USA has enabled engineering students – and professionals – to work in communities around the world, transforming the lives of the people one community at a time. He will be publishing Engineering for Sustainable Human Development next month through ASCE Press. Amadei will receive his award during ASCE’s OPAL Gala ceremony next March 2015 in Washington, DC.
